A hanging piece of tapestry was a substitute for the pictures ,which rich people had. Beautiful motifs and wise proverbs were on the hangings and there was a fabric border, perhaps pieced together. When the hanging had faded, it could be removed to the outdoor toilet and the house-wife designed a new motif and embroidered a new sapient text. If you had a mailorder catalogue, you could choose a nice hanging from it.
